ASDAN Student

The picture shows Chris Morrell (5th yr pupil at Thurso High School) receiving his ASDAN Bronze Award from Head Teacher Dr. Fiona Grant. The ASDAN qualifications and awards are used by schools and colleges to provide opportunities for students 14-19 to develop personal, social and active citizenship skills, work-related skills, and key skills. Kevin McKay (not pictured) also obtained the Award. Congratulations to both pupils.

Recycling at Thurso High

As part of their Social Studies course and with assistance from Biology, 1S3 and 1S5 recently completed a topic about recycling.  The classes initially looked at how they can reduce, reuse or recycle waste, focusing in particular on reducing their use of supermarket polythene bags.  They then completed their own research into recycling in the IT department.  Following on from their research they visited the recycling centre at Janetstown, where June Ross and Kenny Gow gave the pupils a very informative talk about what can be recycled and what it can be recycled into.  The final part of their project was to compile a factsheet that can be taken home to encourage their families to recycle more, especially as the following week will be ‘Recycling Week’.  The pupils will also receive a ‘Bag for Life’ which has been kindly donated by Tesco, which hopefully the pupils will use in an effort to reduce the 13 billion poly bags that are given out by stores each year.

Pushkin Prize

First year pupil Charlotte Gordon is a very keen writer, and recently took part in the annual Pushkin Prizes competition that encourages and rewards young people who enjoy creative writing. The competition invites entries from schools in Scotland and in St Petersburg, Russia.

Although she did not win outright, Charlotte’s three pieces - two prose, one poetry – caught the attention of the judges. As a result, she was invited to attend the prize-giving and five-day writer’s workshop at the Arvon Foundation Writers’ Centre near Inverness. Here the students are given invaluable advice from published writers - this year including Diana Hendry and Gerry Cambridge – and literary agents.

On returning to school after her week away, Charlotte said, ‘It was absolutely brilliant! I really enjoyed it and wrote loads of stuff.’

Thurso High PTA

The PTA had their AGM at the beginning of May and the following were elected as Office Bearers: Heather Carberry (Chairperson), Annette Begg (Vice-Chairperson), Susan Gerrard (Treasurer), Ken Murphy (Secretary). This year the PTA raised over £2500 which will soon be distributed among departments in the school to benefit pupil learning. Thank you to all the staff and pupils who helped in the recent Bag Pack at the COOP and the Coffee Morning at the British Legion. £426.47 was raised at the Coffee Morning and £577.30 at the Bag Pack. Thanks also to the British Legion Thurso and the COOP for their help with these events.

Should you wish to help the PTA please contact any of the above. Contact details can be obtained from the High School receptionist. Meetings are held approximately twice a term details of these are posted on the school website, in the school newsletter and in this column. Our next meeting is in the High School Maths staffroom at 7.30pm on Monday 16th June. Parents and staff are very welcome to attend.

Pupil involvement in Rugby had a boost this week when Technical Teacher Richard Wooles took the first training session for boys this ascademic session with a view to building squads for all year groups next season. Mr Frame has continued with the Girls’ Rubgy teams but the boys have not had any staff member available to take training. Mr Wooles is running training sessions on Thursdays after school until 5pm. All years can come along and no previous experience of the game is required. Mr Wooles is appealing for any interested parent who thinks they can help with the squads to contact him at the school.
